The Fiona Button Scarf is a lovely piece for both fall and winter and is crocheted lengthwise in a slightly modified granny stripe. Two buttons join it together to create a long loop like an infinity scarf, or wear it unbuttoned for a traditional scarf. Versatile and pretty, lofty and warm! No need to crochet button holes either, just use the decorative holes from the scarf.

Great idea! Seems fast to make, isn't it? thanks for sharing! :)

It really is lovely...bravo and thank you for sharing!
DeleteThis is beautiful! I can't wait to try it!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Glad you like it!
DeleteSo beautiful! And a relatively simply pattern that even a newbie like me can give this a try!
ReplyDeleteThanks and have fun!
DeleteLOVE IT!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteMaking this tonight and its so easy to work but I am making the longer version and ran out of yarn! One skein wasn't enough, I still have a row and a quarter to finish. Hoping I can finish this one and get one short scarf out of one more skein...guess we'll see!
ReplyDeleteGood luck, let me know how it turns out! :)
DeletePerhaps I am wrong but in Row 2 when you say to *2 dc in the next space, ch 1, rpt from * I had to DC2 in next space,ch 1 skip 2 spaces rpt to get the same look you have. With your pattern I was adding stitches each row and getting a bumpy growing scarf. What am I missing here?
ReplyDeleteIt sounds to me like it may be increasing because you are skipping two spaces? In the foundation row, you skip chains, but in the next row, each space has 2 dc in it (the ch 1 space from the previous row)
DeleteDoes that help? Please let me know if you have any other questions about it... :)
Make sure you are working the SPACES and not the STITCHES. If you work the st you will increase your scarf like you said. If you are working the spaces then it will come out right.
DeleteGreat way to explain! Thanks "anonymous" :)
DeleteWhat do you mean by spaces?
DeleteThanks so much! Found your patterns on Ravelry, and really liked the duel purpose of the Fiona~ (Scarf & cowl) Got it done in two sittings (while distraced by prime time tv, no less!) and eneded up with it being two colors since I ran out of the grey I had on hand and added cream to finish it off, but I'm really happy with it being two tone!! Now to find some buttons!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I really love that color combination too that you mentioned...sounds really beautiful!
DeleteThank you Anonymous for pointing out to work in the SPACES. Crochet and I are new friends and I too, was confused. Glad I at least thought of coming back to the blog. Now I'm on the third row and all is well! :) My daughter is going to LOVE this scarf for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteGlad it worked out, I love this pattern to for gifts too! I have a couple of them stockpiled!
DeleteOn row 1 does chain 3 count as a dc ?
ReplyDeleteDear Jennifer,
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing this pattern. I started mine two hours ago and I'm finishing it while reading blogs, organizing my iTunes, surfing the web :) and listening to lounge music... just a great night!
Thank you for the lovely photo's too, they are what got me intrigued and got me started!
Happy weekend,
Sounds like my ideal way to spend an evening too! Enjoy!
DeleteI might be doing something wrong, I am pretty new to crochet. I made the shorter version and I chained 124, my scarf is 5 inches wide but it is 59 inches long and 1 ball of yarn wasn't enough. I am using the exact yarn, and a Boye crochet hook. I even double checked my chain stitches. Hopefully I can figure it out, hoping to give some as Christmas gifts.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, the scarf is beautiful.
Hi Kate! Not sure what happened...does each space have just 2 dc in it? Also, at the end of each row, does the turning chain space (the last space at the end of the row) have only one dc in it? If it has two, it will grow longer...let me know if that helps?
DeleteLove it! It was a SUPER quick project! Found it on pinterest A friend gave me a box of yarn and I wanted to make a little something from some of the yarn she gave me. This was the perfect project. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! What a nice friend! A friend with a box of yarn, does it get any better than that??? :)
DeleteThanks for the pattern! I combined a skein of Lions Homespun gray and purple, crocheted it with a S hook starting with a 62 chain. Turned out great!
ReplyDeleteSounds beautiful! Homespun is so soft and snuggly!
DeleteHi, Love this! Just found your blog through All free knitting. Maggie xx
ReplyDeleteAwesome, thanks!
DeleteI just finished one last night, using Loops and Threads Charisma yarn (LOVE this yarn) and a K hook. It's gorgeous. Mine was 45 inches long, 3.5 inches wide. I finished it off with a sc, ch-3, sc edge all around, got it up to about 4.5 inches wide. Only took 3 hours from start to finish! I'm planning to make several more to give as gifts.
ReplyDeleteI like that yarn too, sounds lovely!
DeleteI just finished this and LOVE IT! I had so much fun making it and it was fast too! I had to shorted the chain by six inches though because the first time I made it I was just a foot or so short on yarn, I must be slightly more loose than you. The second time with the six chains off I had about three feet to spare.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you like it!
DeleteThis was my second crochet project and I loved it!!! I finished in less than 3hrs (would of been even quicker If I hadn't made a few mistakes that required ripping out a row a couple of times). I made this in the Wool-ease raspberry and it is pretty. I will be making more for sure. Thank you so much for such a wonderful, easy to follow pattern.
ReplyDeleteRaspberry sounds gorgeous! One of my favorite colors :)
DeleteFinally! PERFECT Christmas present for Mom! Thank you soooo much. :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I hope she likes it!
DeleteI am really new to crocheting. Can someone tell me what DC means? I think I understand the difference between spaces and stitches. Thanks.
ReplyDelete"Anonymous" below left a great explanation, check it out below!
DeleteDC means double crochet. Yarn over, insert hook into work where indicated, draw up a loop ( you should have three loops on hook now), yarn over, draw through two of the loops, yarn over and draw througn all remaining loops. Google double crochet for dummies....that's what I do when I have to make a stitch that I am not familiar with. Also, youtube has some good tutorials. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThat is a wonderful explanation, thanks for sharing!!
DeleteI'm doing the shorter version with one skein of yarn and I also ran out with about one and a quarter rows left to go. I'm new to crocheting but I checked all my stitches and I'm doing everything just like the pattern says. I'm using an M/9mm hook (Susan Bates brand) and Lion Brand super bulky yarn. Could anyone tell me if I might be doing something wrong?
ReplyDeleteAre you using Lion's Wool Ease Thick and Quick or Lion's Hometown USA? Both are super bulky...the reason I'm asking is because I ran into a similar problem with a different project, the Hometown has less yardage than the Wool Ease. I didn't realized it until I was almost finished. Both yarns are considered a similar weight though.
DeleteThis is a beautifully simple design. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteSUPERBE MERCI BIZ
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
DeleteI added to this pattern a bit when making mine- I added 30 ch to make it longer and added tassels and didn't use buttons. I used three colors and because of my pattern I put the colors in I wound up with seven rows. I love how it turned out! I am making the 45 inch version with buttons with my remaining blue yarn ASAP! Wonderful, easy & fast pattern! Thank you so much for sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteIf you want to see how mine turned out, I posted it here on my blog --> http://chasingbluefeathers.blogspot.com/2012/12/chunky-warm-checkered-scarf.html
Love it!! Thanks for sharing, new follower of your site too! :)
DeleteI love this one. I made it this afternoon for a co-workers birthday. It turned out great. I know she will love it. It worked up so fast. I almost didn't realize I was finished!!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I am a huge fan of instant gratification...so glad you liked the pattern! :)
DeleteI am a newcomer to crochet...this scarf is my first project. I intended to make the 45-inch scarf so chained 124, using a size 9 hook and the Thick and Quick yarn. The length of the chain itself was quite a bit longer than 45 inches. (Am I making the chains too loose?) Regardless I continued with the project and was on the last row when I ran out of yarn. My scarf also seemed to be wider at the last row than on the first row. Any help would be appreciated.
ReplyDeleteThe chains might be loose, but I generally make mine a bit loose anyway so the sides will be nice and stretchy. If they are too tight it would make the scarf draw up on one side.
DeleteIf the scarf became wider, it could mean that there was an increase(s) somewhere that would account for it growing wider and subsequently running out of yarn because it became a larger finished piece. I really hope that helps!
I love the look of this scarf and I'm sure that this will be a must for 2013! Thank you for sharing the pattern.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, glad you like it!
DeleteIf i use two strands of worsted weight 4 yarn, would this still work?
ReplyDeleteYou could try...I will sometimes make a test swatch to see how it will look and feel. That helps me to visualize it before I commit to the entire project with that yarn.
DeleteThank you for the patern I already 2 scarves 1 for my daughter and 1 for me they're fabulous. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteYou're so welcome, I'm really glad you are enjoying the pattern!
DeleteThanks so much for this awesome and easy pattern! Realized that i didnt have right size hook but even in a smaller pattern, a few extra rows and a couple more buttons- it still looks fabulous! Must make another one with the proper hook in another lovely colour! Thanks again :)
ReplyDeleteSaw more patterns too- can't wait to try them out!
Great! So glad it worked out for you, happy crocheting!
Deletethanks for share.
ReplyDeleteYou are so welcome!
DeleteWhat exactly do you mean by space in row 1? I've triode several different ways but I am ending up with inconsistent results. Also when I chain 3 at the end to turn I'm ending up with an almost scalloped edge. Obviously I'm not finding "space" 1
ReplyDeleteSure! I was wondering if you are working into the chain spaces (the "holes") or the loops (the actual stitches)? That might be affecting the results...in this pattern, everything is worked in the spaces versus the loops. This could be affecting the width too because working in the loops/stitches would cause a possible increase that make for an inconsistent edge. Let me know if that helps!
DeleteI'm making one right now...:)
ReplyDeleteAwesome!
DeleteYour directions are plain and easy to read. Very pretty patterns. May I add for the newcomers to crochet, always. always check your count or anything else every row. It pays to look it over for any mistake. Happy hooking!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your very kind comment and great advice about checking your count, so glad you shared that! :)
DeleteI'm new to crochet-ing. At my local store they have size N 10mm hooks or size M 9mm hooks. I'm not sure which one I should be using.
ReplyDeleteYes! Definitely get the 9mm hook, the 10 mm would be too big. It's weird isn't it? Sometimes the 9mm is called an "N" sometimes an "M" and even "M/N"
DeleteHope that helps and happy crocheting to you!
Thanks! The 9mm size was definitely the way to go. I finished this today & it looks great :)
DeleteI would have run out of yarn if I'd used the larger hook.
I have made a few of these, and I love them! I was wondering if you would be willing to grant me permission to sell these? I would not be selling them to profit myself, but all profit would be donated to Prayers for Paige Gabriella (check it out on Facebook). Paige is a three year old girl who goes to my church that was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. Several of her family's friends are raising money to help offset their bills. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteIf it is for charity, absolutely..good luck with your cause, the world needs more people like you!
DeleteHow do you attach the buttons? I know how to sew them on, but what do you do w/the ends of the yarn? I've tried weaving them in, but the yarn is so thick that the ends don't want to stay in....
ReplyDeleteThank you for the pattern! I get compliments on it every time I wear it :)
You could always make the ends extra long and weave them in, or just snip them, that's what I do, perhaps that is not the neatest way to do it, but it's not very noticeable to me. :)
DeleteHi Can i have the permission to sell the the finished product . There is a fundraising event in my son's preschool where i am going to sell
ReplyDeleteThank you
Is there a printable version of this pattern??
ReplyDeleteThanks so much.

Just try highlighting needed text and pasting it to a Word document, that way you can print just what you'll need and even save the pattern for later.
DeleteOooh, just finished it. Looks fab. So happy with this. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteAwesome, so glad you like it, happy crocheting!
DeleteJust made this last night...used an N hook and 1 skein Vanna's Colors by Lion - Bulky- in Topaz (101yds) and it worked up perfectly and very quick! I've also made the garden wrap already, and can't wait to do the pavement scarf too! Love your patterns!! Thank you!!
